The agates from the sandstone nearby Unteralpfen in the region of Waldshut are belonging to the most impressive sedimentary formed agates in Germany. Typically for these agates are the reddish and purple colours and their wide banded pattern.
Sometimes little square-shaped cavities can be recognized. These are paramorphs after weathered rhomboedrical carbonates.
Very interesting are the findings of agates from this characteristical type in the gravel pits near Baden-Baden, more than one hundred miles away.
