Natural purple agate “- This is the somewhat pedantic naming for a new African type of agate thatis found in the proximity of the Lake Turkana in Kenya. Its partly vibrating, intensive violet is authentic, and not artificially caused like with similarly teinted Brazilian agates. These agates are occuring nodular in a basaltic hostrock. Unfortunately the nodules, which can reach a size up to 20 cm, are often strongly fractured. Smaller pieces are showing however an appropriate color density and weak, hardly visible banding are suitable for the jewellery market. This fact rises the prices for even very fractured and only weak coloured material. The agates show now and then a mossy-agate formation as well as inclusions of carbonates. Yellow inclusions of ferric oxides strengthen the color contrast in a subtle way.
