Not so well known to the agate collectors as the Backesberg Quarry is the little Schaan quarry near to the township of Baumholder. This quarry is near to road to the Glan-Valley.
From this placed very nice bluish coloured agates are originated. They have a intensivly red coloured crust - this crust is containing the red zeolithic mineral heulandite.
After a break of nearly 30 years a new owner, Juchem Ltd., is starting new operations in the year 2005. Until now only a few specimen of vein-agate could be found, but one was showing awesome “Liesegang-Phenomenons”.
In the year 2009 a large blasting opened agate-bearing layers. A special obligingness of the company Juchem to the Freisener mineral association and a few allied collectors made it possible to save some beautiful specimen from this blasting (3 - 15; ex.coll. Wolfgang Gläser).
It is absolutely forbidden to collect any minerals at this place, because this location is a part of the artillery range area. Militarypolice is controling even this abandoned area regulary.
