Perfect vein-agates: fire-like colours, intensively contrasting pattern, interesting structures - from a little quarry near Steinbach in the northern Saarland.
Responsable for the unusual colours are high amounts of iron-pigments in the agates - caused by high concentrations of iron-sulfides (pyrite and marcasite) in the veins.
Some types of vein-agates can show a tube or eye-pattern - depending on the direction of cutting the vein.
Agate-formation between carbonates are leading to surrealistic patterns.
The operations in the Quarry stopped at the year 2001. It is not allowed to visit the location for collecting agates.
