One of the most important agate places of discovery of Germany is published here in the agate-almanach relatively late (March 2011). The reason for this is the difficulty of publishing authentic material of this place of discovery .

The mining-relicts at the Weiselberg are coming from the middle of the 15. Century. Agates from this oldest German agate mine are objects in high demand for collectors. Larger quantity of “typical” agates of the Weiselberg originates from the gathering from Augustinus Stein, one of  the earliest agate collectors of the Saar Nahe region. Self-finds of its collection originate already from the early postwar years. This collection is representing the foundation-stone of the agate collection of the municipality Freisen, which is administered by the association for local history and issued in its local history museum in the old school building. (Opening times: each 1st Sunday in the month from 13.00 to 18,00 o'clock - or also according to agreement). Looking at these exhibits of the Weiselberg from the Stein´ collection is pointing  that there are actually no fundamental differences of these agates to those of the Karrenberg quarry. This quarry neighbouring the Weiselberg offers since the 1920ies sensational agate findings with a big quantity of agate nodules. The beauty and the value of these stones were also always well-known - in such a way the workers of the quarry acquired themselves a good pocket money, by selling the agates found there. Today one still finds products of these beautiful agates (e.g. ashtrays and bowls) made by Idar-Oberstein gemcutters in several important agate-collections.

Strange to say however not one labeled agate of the Karrenberg quarry is - neither than proof of the similarity in the formation or than proof of different structure - under the Stein´ agates.

The meager new finds at  the Weiselberg and in the proximity of the Weiselberg completely exhibit different structural types than those of the Karrenberg quarry:

- Finds with the house-buildings in the Weiselbergstraße (WB 8), as well as pebble-agates from Osterbach Creek represent often relatively large nodules ( up to 30cm length). From the outside they often show a very beautiful red shale, which covers however only few milimeters of banded agate. Inward the nodule then the agate usually changes to macrocrystallinic quartz. With something luck inside the quartz-formation an internal agate can be found.

- Jasper-picks of the tendencies of the Weiselberg and neighbouring areas of arable land show very beautifully formed vein-like, yellow-orange colored and wildly formed patterns, which can be polished also well. (WB 1, WB 9, WB 10, WB11 )

- Finds on the game field in the highest place of the Weiselberg show vein agates of an interesting pink to red colour. However the pieces are usually very small.

- Gathering of agate proofs in the proximity of the excavations at the Weiselberg show intensively yellow and red colored formation (WB 2). Likewise brownish colours occur. (WB 6).

Which conclusions are offered by these observations? Two possibilities are available: - Either nowadays no more agates can be found at the Weiselberg, which are showing similarities to the agates of the Karrenberg quarry - differently than to rockhounding-times of  Augustinus Stein.

 - or the agates of the collection Augustinus Stein labeled as Weiselberg agates represent at least partial agates from the Karrenberg quarry.
