home / agates worldwide / Europe / Germany / Thuringia / Modelwitz

This agate occurrence was world-wide-admitted by the efforts of the collector Heinz Geidel, whose collection of more than 6000 micro agates - in sizes of 2 to 8 mm - found an entry in the “Guinessbook of records”. These nodules originate from a yellowish-green mica-phorpyrite near to Modelwitz near to Altenburg. The size of the nodules can reach rarely up to 40mm. The formation of fine eye agates and so-called “ruin-agates” is very interesting, with which tectonically caused breaks in the formation process of the agate were cemented.
