Since the year 2002 in the region of Idar-Oberstein a new kind of fine blue chalcedony is offered as “Malawi-Chalcedony”. It is a bluish, sometimes banded material that is showing simularities to the namibian Blue Lace Chalcedony. It is lightly blue to cobaltian blue and rarely purple colour seems not to fade in sunlight. In the center of the specimen a pattern composed by spherulithics and sometimes drusy quartz seems to be typical. Another characteristic is the occurence of small yellowish inclusions of rhomboedrical carbonates. This material is similar to the blue Chalcedony from Springboek in Namibia.
