In the area of Grand Marais the formation of thundereggs was possible due to the occurrence of silicarich vulcanites. These contain fortification-agate only subdominated in their center. Usually the non-parallel banded flame agate shows up as early formation, followed now and then by gravitational banded agate.

Beside this agate-filled thundereggs some specimen contain violet fluorite.
