Hoot Elkin discovered the Deschutes Jasper in the the 1970ies while prospecting the gorge of the Columbia River. He found the place, because here already the natives dug for hard stones, from which tools could be chipped. Hoot still found traces of the natives until 15 feet of depth. The mine is at present closed and probably exploited. Deschutes Jasper ranks among the most attractive Jaspers of the USA, not least because of the good polishing ability and the beautiful pattern.
