In the iron ore occurrences of the Iron Range a lot of different jasper-varieties do occur. One is this very aesthetic and unusual formed: a brecciated jasper in a hematite-matrix. The brick-red portions consist of a fine-grained mixture of ferric oxides, while the metallically reflecting hematite in connected layers appears. This hematite gets a lustrous polish and is giving a beautiful contrast to the red inclusions.
