“...In the far North of the North Island, Curnows Road stands out as the foremost site for finding agate. Digging is permitted providing a permit is gained from the Whangarei Rock and Gemstone Club. The volcanics in this area have given rise to the silicate rocks - jasper, agate, chert, chalcedony, petrified wood and carnelian. Some particularly beautiful carnelian can be found here and if you are very lucky - sagenite agate. The most common collecting material there is known as storm agate which is characterized by golden- brown, yellow, or even pink jasper areas separated by rivers of clear or bluish chalcedony. This storm agate may also be found at Taipuha...”
